Who We Are
Afya na Haki (Ahaki) is an African research and training institute that uses africentric approaches to generate knowledge and enhance advocacy capacities in the areas of Health, Human Rights and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
Our aim is to co-create and front African solutions to African problems by engaging Africans on issues of health, human rights and SRHR. We do this through generating evidence, building advocacy capacities and enabling strategic partnerships and collaborations, that embrace appreciative questioning and positive African narratives to determine how these intersect with the global agendas. Ahaki shifts the narrative from Africans being victims to that of agency – being able to engage in changing their own lives and realities.
Africentrism Approach
Ahaki interprets Africentrism through the lens of
(i) positive African narratives;
(ii) engaging the African regional and sub-regional institutions like the African Union (AU), East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD);
(iii) supporting and collaborating with African NGOs; and
(iv) engaging African experts and individuals on African perspectives with in global conversations on health, human rights, and the historical, social and political determinants of SRHR.
A note from the Director General
During our first year of existence, a lot of effort has been focused on conceptual development; understanding and research; team building and institutional development; and relationship building and partner collaboration. Our website underscores the foundational work, efforts and the promise of a future where we all harness Africa’s potential.
