For the past several years, Africa has witnessed a disparate, infrequent but steady stream of court decisions pushing the boundaries and expanding legal access to safe abortion. Courts in Malawi, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and South Africa operating within different normative and socio- cultural contexts have delivered a medley of landmark rulings seeking to clarify or expand abortion rights. The trajectory, it appears, is an upward one. However, efforts to expand sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and access to abortion continue to arouse political, religious, and cultural sentiments on the continent. It has been advanced and opposed in equal measure through law, policy and litigation.
