The Afya na Haki Institute, in collaboration with RAES and the African Institute of Investigative Journalism, is launching a 3-month media fellowship under the theme: Navigating and mitigating the impact of complex global policies like the Global Gag Rule (GGR). Restrictive foreign policies initiated and backed by the U.S. government such as the GGR and Geneva Consensus Declaration have gravely impacted SRHR implementation, services, advocacy and work in Africa. These policies restrict access to SRHR care and services, disrupt partnerships and collaborations and increase financial constraints for the organisations and activists.
This Media Fellowship is designed to nurture and enhance the capacities of African journalists and communication experts with the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively and strategically report on reproductive justice issues amidst the complex global policy shifts.

Focus of the Media Fellowship

  • Understanding the Global Gag Rule: Definition, Historical Context, and Impact on Reproductive Justice and Activism.
  • Current Landscape: Recent Global Developments, Case Studies, and Countermeasures.
  • Investigative Journalism: Engaging affected communities and documenting their experiences.
  • Advocacy and Action: Strategic communications, Movement building, Engaging policy makers, Legal interventions and Regional, and National
    advocacy.

Target Audience

This fellowship is open to African media professionals, including journalists and communication experts from the LIRA Programme
Focus countries that have a profound yearning to enhance their knowledge and skills in navigating and mitigating the impact of complex global policies like the Global Gag Rule.
